Soracom Air bundle notification settings now available

Soracom provides a number of Soracom Air for Cellular IoT SIMs which include a data bundle each month. As a courtesy, Soracom will send a notification to the primary email address of your account when a SIM's data usage approaches the amount of bundled data. These notifications are automatically enabled for the following IoT SIM subscriptions:

  • planX3 X3-5MB
  • plan-D D-300MB
  • plan-K2 K2-300MB

With this update, you can now disable these notifications in order to stop receiving data usage notification emails. To disable:

  1. Login to your account using your root account email address and password.
  2. Click your account menu, then select Email settings.
  3. From the Configuration section, enable the Disable notifications for low remaining data usage on supported subscriptions option, then click Save.

Please note that this setting will disable data usage notifications for all of the IoT SIM subscriptions listed above. If you would like to re-enable notifications for specific SIMs, you can use the Event Handler feature with a SIM Monthly total traffic rule and Send email action to create a custom notification for a specific SIM or group of SIMs. Please refer to the Event Handler documentation for more information.

Discontinuation of the old SIM Management interface

This is a notice to all customers that Soracom is preparing to discontinue the old SIM Management interface of the User Console.

Currently, customers may switch between two SIM Management interfaces in the User Console by clicking the link located above the list of SIMs:

  • The New SIM Management interface has a URL that begins with https://console.soracom.io/sims
  • The Old SIM Management interface has a URL that begins with https://console.soracom.io/subscribers

Discontinuation of the old interface will allow Soracom to provide a more streamlined User Console experience and continue to make improvements for all customers.

Customers who are already using the new SIM Management interface will not be affected by this change.

Differences between the new and old interfaces

The new SIM Management interface provides several improvements over the old version:

  • Support for managing Subscription Containers
  • Up to 20 times faster loading performance
  • Improved usability and design following the Soracom Design System
  • Dedicated SIM details URLs for bookmarking and easy sharing

Compared to the old SIM Management interface, the following features or settings have been moved or are no longer supported:

Feature or setting Old SIM Management interface New SIM Management interface
Filter by Status Applied using the dropdown button next to the Status column of the list of SIMs Applied using the Search bar located above the list of SIMs
Watch Service Configured by selecting a SIM and clicking Details Configured by modifying Group Settings
Excluding individual SIMs from Event Handler Configured by selecting a SIM and clicking Details Not supported, but can still be configured using API or CLI

Discontinuation schedule

For customers who are still using the old SIM Management interface, please be advised of the following discontinuation schedule:

Redirecting to the new interface

Starting from early May, users will be automatically redirected from the old SIM Management interface to the new interface. Users logging into the User Console using their root account should not encounter any errors. However, users logging in with SAM User credentials may see a permission error if their user has not been given permission to access the new interface.

If you encounter these permission errors, please follow the instructions below to update your SAM User permissions.

A temporary link will also be provided at the top of the new SIM Management interface, which will allow you to return to the old interface in case you are unable to update your SAM User permissions for any reason. Please note that this link will be removed later, so we recommend updating your SAM User permissions and switching to the new interface as soon as possible.

If you have any concerns about switching to the new SIM Management interface, please don't hesitate to ask us for assistance by contacting us through one of the following options:

  • Fill out this form to provide your feedback.
  • From the User Console, click the Support menu and choose Contact Us to submit an inquiry.

Removing the old interface

Once Soracom has determined that customers have successfully switched to the new SIM Management interface, the old interface as well as any temporary links will be removed, and users will no longer be able to access the old interface.

Resolving permission errors

If you are logging into the User Console as a SAM User which does not have permission to access the new SIM Management interface, you will see the following error message:

SAM user "******" does not have sufficient permissions to use the new SIM Management feature. Please ask your administrator to add the following permissions: `Query:searchSims` and `Group:listGroups`.

To resolve this error, please ask the owner or administrator of your Soracom account to follow these instructions and add permission to your SAM User:

  1. Log in to the User Console using the root account (email address and password) credentials
  2. Click the top right account menu, then select Security.
  3. Click the Users tab, then click the name of the SAM User to update.
  4. Update the permissions settings to add the following permissions, with an effect of "allow".
Operations Permissions
Display the new SIM management interface `Query:searchSims`
Display group information `Group:listGroups`
Add/update tags `Sim:putSimTags`
Delete tags `Sim:deleteSimTags`

If you have multiple SAM Users, please repeat these steps for each user that should have permission to access the new interface. Alternatively, if you are managing SAM User permissions with the Roles function, you may update the permissions setting accordingly for a role.

If you are unsure of how to update SAM User or Role permissions, you may refer to the Users & Roles: Permissions documentation for additional details, or contact us for further assistance.

Notice of updated US and Canada shipping options and fees

We would like to inform US and Canada customers of two updates to our shipping options and fees.

New expedited shipping option

We are pleased to announce a new expedited shipping option that is available for orders with delivery within the United States. This expedited shipping option will allow you to receive your orders sooner compared to our standard shipping option, with a delivery timeframe of 2-3 business days (plus order processing time).

When placing your next order from the User Console, you will see a new Use expedited shipping option during checkout.

This option is currently available only for US or Canada customers who are shipping their order within the United States.

Updated shipping costs

Due to recent courier rate increases, our stanard shipping costs have increased. The new shipping costs depend on your order details and will apply to orders with delivery within the United States and Canada.

Although we understand this may cause some inconvenience, we have endeavored to provide the best possible rates available, and will continue to look for ways to optimize shipping costs.

Thank you for your understanding.

EoD Bytes option now available for Soracom Beam TCP to HTTP/HTTPS

A new EoD (End-of-Data) Bytes option is now available for the Soracom Beam TCP to HTTP/HTTPS entry point.

When a device sends data to the TCP to HTTP/HTTPS entry point, Beam converts the data to an HTTP request and sends it to the specified server. Then when a response is received, Beam similarly converts the body of the HTTP response back to a TCP message and returns it to the device. EoD Bytes are added to the end of this response data, which a device can use to determine when the end of the response data.

By default, Soracom Beam appends a LF (line feed) character 0x0a to the response data.

With this update, you can now change or remove the EoD Bytes sequence. This can be helpful for devices that have trouble recognizing the 0x0a LF character, or for situations where you want to use a different byte sequence.

The EoD Bytes option can also be combined with the existing Skip status code option which will suppress adding the HTTP status code to the beginning of the response data. With both options enabled, response data will be returned to the device as-is without any modification.

For additional details, please refer to the Soracom Beam: TCP → HTTP/HTTPS Entry Point documentation.

Soracom Lagoon 3 release

We are excited to announce the release of Soracom Lagoon 3. This release brings several new features to Lagoon, including variables, library panels, enhanced alerts, and enhanced permission management.

For reference, the current version of Soracom Lagoon will hereafter be referred to as Lagoon 2.

Lagoon 3 features

Variables

When creating a panel, you can now set a variable for the data source. This allows you to use a single panel (or set of panels) for multiple devices and dynamically update the panel according to which device is selected. Read more about using variables (Japanese).

Library panels

If you use certain panels frequently, the library panel allows you to save and reuse them on multiple dashboards. Read more about using library panels (Japanese).

Enhanced alerts

Lagoon 3 provides additional configuration options for alerts:

  • Calculations and aggregated data can now be used for alerts. For example, if your device collects temperature data from two separate sensors, you can configure a panel to calculate the difference between these two temperatures, and a corresponding alert to trigger when this difference exceeds a certain value. See an example of sending a notification when the difference between two temperatures exceeds 7°C (Japanese).
  • A new mute timing option lets you specify quiet hours, such as to suppress alert notifications during evening hours or on weekends. See an example of configuring mute timings to prevent notifications on Saturdays and Sundays (Japanese).

Enhanced dashboard permissions

In addition to dashboard-level permissions, permissions can now also be set on folders, which will be inherited by the dashboards in the corresponding folder. Read more about managing folder permissions (Japanese).

Other differences between Lagoon 2 and Lagoon 3

Lagoon 3 has a number of other changes, such as the types of panels available. For more information, please refer to Differences between SORACOM Lagoon 2 and SORACOM Lagoon 3 (Japanese).

Discontinuation of Lagoon 2

With this release, Lagoon 2 is now scheduled to be discontinued on May 31, 2024.

Additionally, as of April 18, 2023, users will not be able to use Lagoon 2 for new projects.

Current users of Lagoon 2 may continue to use Lagoon 2 during this time, however we recommend migrating to Lagoon 3 (below) before Lagoon 2 is discontinued in order to avoid unexpected interruption.

Migrating from Lagoon 2 to Lagoon 3

For current users of Lagoon 2, a copy of your Lagoon 2 data has been automatically migrated to Lagoon 3 as of April 17, 2023, 09:00 (UTC). Prior to the discontinuation of Lagoon 2, you may use both Lagoon 2 and Lagoon 3 in parallel. Please rest assured that during this period, you will not be double-charged for using both Lagoon 2 and Lagoon 3.

Please refer to the Migrating from Lagoon 2 to Lagoon 3 guide (Japanese) for additional details on data that was not included in the April 17 migration, and for instructions on how to manually migrate any changes you may have made in Lagoon 2 after this time.

Improved radio type details in Session History

Soracom provides detailed cellular session history information in the User Console as well as via API. These details can be used to check the connection status and perform basic troubleshooting, such as to check the country and network a device is connected to, and the dates and times of connections or disconnections.

The radio type of a session is included in these details, and until now have been either GSM or 3G or LTE, indicating that a device was connecting via a 2G/3G network or a 4G network, respectively.

With this update, the radio type details will now show GSM and 3G networks separately, and will also show if devices are connected to an LTE-M or an NB-IoT network:

  • GSM - When a device is connected to a 2G network
  • 3G - When a device is connected to a 3G network
  • LTE - When a device is connected to a 4G/LTE network
  • LTE-M - When a device is connected to an LTE Cat-M1 network
  • NB-IoT - When a device is connected to an NB-IoT network

Please note that the radio type details displayed in the User Console and API correspond to the radio type reported by the local network. In some cases, a local network may report a different radio type than what the device is actually using. For example, if a device is connected to an LTE-M network but the local network reports the connection as LTE, the radio type will appear in the User Console and API as LTE.

For additional information on how to check session history, please refer to the Subscriber Status: Viewing Detailed Session Status documentation.
